Sallie Fincher Cates

This portrait is of my great aunt (my grandfather's sister) Sarah Lillie (Sallie) Fincher, born 1 March 1872 in Pike County, Georgia, and one of her babies, probably Robert Verner, born in 1893..    

She was the 8th child of Joseph Travis and his second wife, Martha Jane Brooks Fincher. However, Sallie was Joseph's 13th of his 14 children by two wives. There is an account of his daughter Sallie's birth in an excerpt from Joseph Travis Fincher's 1872 Diary.

On 30 October 1892, at age 20, Sallie married William T. Cates in Pike County. The wedding was performed by S. R. England, Minister of the Gospel.

Sallie and Will Cates' known children were Robert Verner (born August 1893), Joseph Crowder (born September 1896), Martha Gladys (born April 1899), Lillian Maude (born 10 September 1901), and Doris Claire (born circa 1909).

William passed away at age 67 in Fitzgerald, Georgia (Ben Hill County) on 19 December 1935. Sallie died at age 64 on 2 September 1936 in Alto, Georgia (Habersham County).
